2007

A good time was had by all at at the 2007 Chemistry Awards Banquet, co-hosted by the department and the Graduate Chemical Society. Many thanks to all who helped organize this successful event. To see a complete list of awards, awardees and more pictures of the event click here.

Congratulations to our talented undergrads including: Derek Brigham, Andrew Goodin, Colt Heathman, Justin Ely,  Jonathon Walter, Noah Holt, Rebecca Moore, Morgan Huff, Evan Laiho, Kevin Miller,  Barrett Reidinger, Casey Stevenson, Andrew Hansen, Jessica Jackson, Benjamin Lantz, Trevor Omoto, Jamie Otto, Rianne Pajari, Matthew Pokrifchak, Thomas Porter,  Shawn Reichers, Stephanie Tintinger, Margot Ulk,Paul Marquard, and Brian Shuhler. Brian Shuhler also won the College of Sciences Distinguished undergraduate student award, and the novice researcher award at the recent undergraduate research poster session (advisor Ming Xian).

We are also very proud of our graduate students, who perform the daily research activities within the department, without which there would be no external funding. Congratulations to: Josh Alfaro, Nathan Kaiser, Melissa Ensor, Kimberly Kaplan, Maria Kriz, Pat Pastor,  Jenifer Shafer, Tom Shehee, Elsa Silva-Lopez, Brian Webb, Erin Finn, Mark Ogden, Chi-Chi Peng, He Sun, Andrew Shaller, Maggie Tam, and Xiaoting Tang. This year also marked the inception of three new departmental awards, designed to illustrate what each graduate student should be striving for in thier quest for a Ph.D. This years awardee for outstanding teaching activities: Ben Friesen (Mazur group). The awardee for outstanding research activities: Nate Kaiser (Bruce group). The awardees for outstanding scholarship (combination of teaching, research, and academic excellence): Mark Ogden (Nash group) and Andy Shaller (Li group).

Finally, in what has come to be a yearly tradition, the graduate students chose Jim Bruce, as thier faculty of the year and topic of thier faculty roast, performed excellently be Ms. Jenifer Shafer (Nash group).

The Department is pleased to welcome our newest faculty member, JIm Brozik, who joined us in January 2007. Prof. Brozik received his Ph.D. in 1996 from WSU, under the guidance of Glen Crosby. He then went to Los Alamos National Laboratory for his post-doctoral studies and began his academic career at the University of New Mexico.

The biophysical studies in the Brozik group utilize dynamic single molecule imaging, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and patch-clamp electrochemistry to answer basic questions about how dynamical changes in protein structure are correlated to biochemical function. His material science program is generally centered on understanding the physical properties and basic design principles necessary to build molecular scale machines.  To learn more about Prof. Brozik's research click here.

Congratulations to Prof. Jim Bruce who was recently promoted to the rank of full professor! Professor Bruce's laboratory is developing and applying new analytical capabilities and strategies to exploit high performance mass spectrometry to overcome today's barriers to systems-level comprehension of biological organisms.
