2006
The Department is pleased to welcome our newest faculty member, Ming Xian, who joined us in August 2006.
Prof. Xian received his B.S. in chemistry from Nankai University, China. He then joined Professor Jin-Pei Cheng’s group at Nankai for his early graduate study. In 1999, he moved to Wayne State University to continue his research under Professor Peng George Wang. After received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 2003, he did postdoctoral research with Professor Amos B. Smith, III as a DOD postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.
The core of Dr. Xian’s research interests comprises the desire to combine organic synthesis with bioorganic chemistry to examine, understand, and solve problems of biological and medicinal significance. His group is interested in the areas of (1) synthetic methodology development and natural product synthesis; (2) protein molecular recognition and interaction; and (3) the development of new therapeutic agents. Faculty Impact- Profs. Sue Clark, Aurora Clark, and Ken Nash were panelists at a DOE-sponsored workshop titled “Basic Research Needs for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems” held in July in Washington, D.C. About 100 scientists worldwide were invited to identify crucial areas in basic research that will support development of the next generation of Nuclear Energy systems. The meeting report may form the basis for new Congressional funding in this area. Visit the Radiochemistry group page.
Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Glen Crosby, the recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Pioneer Award! The award honors “individuals who have exemplified, by their contributions,
excellence in the Chemical Sciences.”
Congratulations to Prof. Alex Li who received promotion to therank of full professor. Want to know more about the Li research group?
We are tremendously proud of the high quality research performed by our undergaduates. At the recent undergraduate research symposium, John Whitaker ('06) received first prize in physical sciences division, and Corey Fugate won the novice researcher award. Great job guys!
Congratulations to undergraduates Sarah Low (Chem. Major) and Wendy Smith (Chem. Minor), who received the College of Sciences Distinguished Undergraduate Student Awards.
A fond farewell to Ron Newton, our chemistry instructional laboratory supervisor, who retired this year. Ron was renowned for his excellent support of faculty and students and his very successful outreach programs to local high schools. We wish Ron and his wife all the best in their future, they will be sorely missed.
