2003

The Department is pleased to welcome Pat Meier, who arrived in August 2003. Prof. Meieir received his BS degree from the University of California at San Diego in 1975. He then went to the University of Wisconsin for his PhD, where he joined the research group of Dr. Edwin Vedejs and studied the mechanism of the Wittig Reaction and took part in developing a sulfur ylide based synthesis of Methynolide. After earning his Ph.D in 1981, he joined the research group of Dr. Larry Overman at the University of California at Irvine and helped to develop a synthesis of Gelsemine, an alkaloid natural product. In 1985 he joined the faculty at the University of Washington (Seattle) in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry. In 1991, he and his wife (also an academician) moved to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor.

The central focus of Prof. Meier's research is the development of new methodology and approaches to the synthesis of organic compounds of biological interest. This focus, by virtue of its nature, requires that all projects have as a central focus the synthesis of a specific target and a secondary focus of the biological interest of the molecule explored. A significant aspect of his research is the extensive collaborative nature, especially with respect to the molecular biology, which encourages students in these projects to be well diversified in knowledge and techniques.
