High School Students practice Chemistry in Fulmer

On a Friday in October when the Chemistry laboratories weren’t scheduled for classes, sixty high school students took over. They performed advanced laboratory experiments that they are unable to perform at their high school in Spokane.

Later in the semester, students from Mead High School and St. George’s Academy also visited the labs.

On another Fall afternoon, Ferris High School juniors and seniors conducted a hydrogenation experiment (converting octene to octane) that relates to the gasoline production process. Participation in the WSU program allows the Spokane students to conduct laboratory procedures that cannot be performed in their high school labs because they lack the sophisticated, expensive analysis instruments and the required safety equipment.

This is the third year that Ferris students have participated in the program, the sixteenth year for Mead High School, and the second year for St. George’s.
